More women than ever are entering academia. Since 1992, more women are graduating than men with a bachelor’s degree, and many of those women go on to pursue advanced degrees. The rising costs of college tuition and books, however, confront many women who would be able to better themselves and their families by pursuing a college degree. The government, universities and many companies recognize the greater good in women pursuing a college education and offer grants to cover or subsidize the cost of the degree.

College Grants for Women

There is a wide range of college grants available for women. Some grants are straight forward and easy to qualify for. Others are more discerning about the location, degree and ethnicity of the woman applying for the college grant.

Federal college grants for women are focused primarily on women who are overcoming financial obstacles or pursuing a degree for the greater good, such as a teaching or social work program. The Pell Grant is one of the most well-known government college grants. The Pell Grant awards funds each year for students from low-income families. Other programs supplement scholarships for low-income students. Still others offer opportunities for students in selected areas of study to earn a degree with government assistance.

State college grants for women vary according the programs offered by each state. The various state agencies have a great deal of influence on which programs are offered. Often the educational grant programs offered at the state or local level are programs that give you the skills to go on and serve the greater good or that promote minorities, including women, in certain fields such as math or science.

Corporate and professional grants

for women in college are vast and readily available in many cases. These grants are one of the few forms of free money as long as you follow the criteria set forth by the company or organization. Many companies offer grants to students who demonstrate the right interest and background, often including minorities and low-income individuals. Others are available to students of certain ethnicities in certain fields. The grants are hugely varied and can be as complex to sort through as the many scholarship opportunities available for college.

Using College Grants for Women

Of all the grant programs available, college grants are among the simplest to obtain. They also come with the fewest strings attached. In most cases, if you’re pursuing a certain degree plan, have a certain income level and are a woman – especially a minority woman - you can find multiple programs to help fund your way through a degree plan. Using the grants is as simple as applying for applicable programs and then using the funds released to you to buy books, pay tuition and even pay for some living expenses throughout the years of school.

Be ready, however, in some cases to document the use of your degree. For example, a degree in education funded by a grant program might require you to teach in a certain subject or geographical area for a set number of years. You could be required to fill out forms and follow through on the original terms of the grant or risk being asked to repay it.
